Amritsar, March 8:
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur on Monday congratulated the women on the occasion of International Women Day, which is celebrated worldwide on March 8.
In a video message released on the day, SGPC president Jagir Kaur said I congratulate all the sisters settled in country and the world on this day of women.
“I feel that there is no such eve or occasion, which is not attached to the woman. Be it any matter at home, society, or any country, the woman is playing its role everywhere. By strengthening the women, we strengthen the society, communities and the country”, said Bibi Jagir Kaur.
SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said that the first Sikh master Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji has given the equal right to women about five and a half centuries ago.
"Explore any historic page of Sikh religion, the Sikhs Gurus have given equal rights to women without any discrimination. I understand that today the people of country and the world demand right to equality for the women. But we should be thankful to Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, who gave us (the woman) equal right, about five and a half centuries ago", said Bibi Jagir Kaur.
"Today, I request the people of country that Guru Nanak Sahib has given equal stature to the woman in his Gurbani and we shall all follow the same. Today, the woman is at the forefront in every field, whether it is civil or police services like IAS, IPS, PCS officers and they are running administrative services well and flying fighter jets as pilots. If the government resolute to give 50% reservation to the women to contest elections at the posts of Sarpanch, Panch and others, then the government and society must ensure that this is not limited to the reservation on papers only. But the women should be actually given opportunities on the basis of their ability, thinking and work skills in a free manner. So that, they can attain success with their abilities", said SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur.
"I am thankful to Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, that the panth has grown with his philosophy of equality and given me an opportunity to work as the president of Shiromani Gurdwara Panbandhak Committee. No bigger proof of equality is required than this. I would give message to my sisters that the rights are not sought but these are obtained with efforts. We shall look after our rights and the responsibilities together. While completing the responsibilities, we shall continue to struggle for the rights as well. To give respect to society, it must be thought that no day is complete without the women", said Bibi Jagir Kaur.
